biography
MARCELLO SAMBATI is a poet and a theatre author and actor.
In 1980 he founded in Rome the experimental theatre company Dark Camera and the Theatre Furio Camillo, landmark for new generations of fringe theatre actors, authors and critics.
He wrote and acted in several plays, in Italy and abroad (Germany, Austria, United States) and participated in national and international festivals.
From the archaic beginnings with Frantoio e latte materno –1975 (Oil Mill and Mother’s Milk) to therarefaction of Koto Ba (1995) Sambati’s work went through a long process of vanishing and emptying: in the stages of Nature (Natures) and Avventure (Adventures), in the sceneries created by Giuseppe Bertolucci in Rome (1980-81): Paesaggi Metropolitani (Metropolitan landscapes) showed in Wien in 1982. From the renewal of poetic research in Stato solitario di allarme (Solitary State of Alarm) and Pezzi del buio (Pieces of Darkness) 1985-1987 up to the most significant performance of those years: Ecce Homo for Friedrich N. – 1988, performed in New York at La Mama E.T.C. in 1989 during the Festival of Italian theatre.
1990-1994: the destruction of scenic materiality (The Opposition of Creatures, Eros Liebe) and the discovery of the dramatic force of poetry: from Milo de Angelis (The Construction of Light, in tour in Italy and Austria in 1993) to Edmond Jabés (The Rainbows of Edmond Jabés, only performed at Santarcangelo theatre festival in 1993)
In 1992 his essay Corpo scritto a matita (Body Written in Pencil) was published on the magazine Società dei Pensieri. Koto Ba, performance of empty transparency, opened the season of poetry as the absolute material of theatre and through the fundamental experience of workshops Sambati got the ethic knowledge of theatrical practice. From the workshops with disabled people sprung “Lo spazio del sogno, rituali e liturgie della differenza (The Space of Dreams, Rituals and Ceremonies of Difference) 1999-2001 and Ricerca del vento (The Search for Wind) 2002.
In 1996 he published Carta dei Respiri (Paper of Breath) with “I Quaderni del Battello Ebbro”, staged the same year with the title La Lingua nova (The New Language)
In collaboration with Luigi Francini, Lorenzo Mango and Simonetta Lux, he created the festival Officine Poetiche in Tuscania. In 1997 started the project Prometheu, a dramaturgic search on the origins of language, with workshops and performances in Padua, Catania and Tuscania with various groups of young actors (a summary of the many experiences was broadcasted by Audiobox on Radio Tre on August, 23rd 1999). In the same year he published Tavolette Apule (Apulian Tablets), out of which was taken the performance Orfeo Apulo (Apulian Orpheus).
In 1998 He starred as the male protagonist in Stefano Grossi’s Film: “Due come Noi, non dei Migliori” that participated to the Locarno Film Festival.
In the same year Marcello Sambati together with Vera Stasi and Tuscania d’Arte founded Tuscania Teatro, resident regional organization for the scenic arts. He staged Orfeo Apulo, vocal work that debuts in Catania in September during the project “Mappe”. In 1998, he adapted Tanizaki’s short story and in coproduction with the dance company “Il Pudore Bene in Vista” stages Sho la bellezza finale (Sho the final beauty) performed at “Teatri di Vita” in 2000.
In 2000 he published and staged L’opera delle farfalle (The Opera of Butterflies) in coproduction with The “Teatro di Roma”.
In 2001 he began the “Project of Darkness“, consisting in a trilogy of lectures divided into three performances. In 2002 he staged the first lecture, Dall’oscurità (From Darkness) and in 2003 the second L’incompatibile (The Incompatible) . In the same period he published Danze Locuste (Locust Dances), one hundred poetic tablets for a theatre of the body. In 2005 he stagd the last part of the triptych: Addio (Farewell). The triptych “Lezioni delle Tenebre” (Dall’Oscurità, 2002; L’Incompatibile, 2003; Addio, 2005) explores and maps the Theatre of Interiority showing the emptiness and the insubstantiality of being.
In 2006 He wrote the screenplay and also starred in “Il Giorno, La Notte e poi L’Alba” directed by Paolo Bianchini. In 2007 he starred in Franco Battiato’s “Niente è come sembra”.
Between 2008 and 2010 he published three more poetic collections: Sul cammino dei passi brevi,with drawings by Romano Sambati (edizioni La camera verde) 2008, Natura Requiem (edizioni La camera verde)2009, staged the same year directed by Marcello Sambati with Alessandra Cristiani, Chiara Casciani and Sabrina Broso; and Tenebre (edizioni La camera verde) 2010, including the poems of the three performances forming the Project of Darkness.
In 2016 he publishes the poem collection Esitazioni (Empiria) and during the same year starts the teathrical workshop in collaboration with Scuola Oscena in Catania (now at its third edition). At the end of each edition of Scuola Oscena he stages the performances: Dell’ombra e della luce 2017, Malinconie 2018 e Dioniso, la rosa della carne 2019.
In 2017 he publishes Lo sguardo del sembiante Idra Roma e Apparire, Essere edited by Elena Rosa, illustrating his performative pratices.
In 2018 is published the book Margine e Meraviglia, la scena corporea di Marcello Sambati, edited by Carla Romana Antolini. Together with Alesandra Cristian and GianniStaropili he stages the performance Clorofilla.
In 2019 he stages Qualcosa da selvaggiamente sprecare and Atlante dell’attore solitario capitolo uno La marionetta.
He carries on his poetic research and keeps exploring new territories of poetic expression.
